Houston We Have a Boy Space Themed Baby Shower

Houston We Have a Boy Space Themed Baby Shower

Planning a baby shower is always special, but going big with a space theme turned my brother & sister in laws celebration into something extraordinary.

If you want to wow guests with starry decor, interactive activities, and treats that are truly out of this world, you’ve landed in the right place!

This guide breaks down every detail of re-creating our “Houston, we have a boy” space themed baby shower, brimming with ideas to help you throw a memorable party for your favorite future astronaut.

Decorations That Are Truly Stellar

Creating a space that feels both cozy and cosmic is easier than you think.

We wanted the guests to be transported from the moment they arrived, starting with a central photo area that doubled as the “control center” for our celebration.

Statement Photo Arch

A photo area gives everyone a reason to snap a pic!

Ours anchored the room with a giant arch decorated in soft teals, blues, and pops of silver.

The highlight was our “Houston, we have a boy” banner, stretched across the arch, surrounded by a balloon garland in deep space hues.

  • Balloon garland: Blues, teals, silvers, and white with scattered metallic star-shaped balloons.
  • Banner: “Houston, we have a boy” in bold, playful lettering for the perfect theme.
  • Astronaut and rocket ship cutouts: Life-sized and totally Instagram-worthy.
  • Foil star balloons: Placed around the party area for extra sparkle.

Pro tip: If you want your own space-themed baby shower to feel extra immersive, position the arch near the entry or as the focal point so guests are welcomed into your galaxy as soon as they arrive.

Starry Details and Table Decor

No detail was too small for this celebration.

The guest tables sparkled with galactic-inspired touches that pulled the theme together without overwhelming the eye.

  • Soft teal and blue color palette. Instead of going with dark and intense “space themed” colors we opted for a softer color palette which ended up being perfect for a baby shower.

  • Custom baby bottle rockets. We made these from dollar store baby bottles, painted the tips red, and glued on blue foam fins we cut out! These were so fun to make and made the perfect centerpieces for the tables.

  • Clear glitter dinner plates. We chose heavy duty clear glitter plates, utensils, and cups. They had a celestial effect that everyone loved. The hit of the party though had to be these astronaut napkins from Meri Meri. They were so cute, people were taking them home after the shower!

  • Baby shower itinerary. We had a very short window for the entire baby shower, so we decided to keep things on track with a printed baby shower itinerary. Although it may seem unnecessary, little details like this help guests relax. It can guide them to explore activities, know when it’s time to eat, and when it’s time to be present for an event like a cake cutting or game.

  • Baby word scramble and baby trivia games. These little activity cards we purchased from Amazon were such a hit! Perfect to fill in while waiting for timed activities, for those who aren’t as mobile, and also to help bring a table of potential strangers to interact with each other.

We do however deeply regret choosing these tablecloths from Amazon. They were incredibly wrinkled, full of static, and no amount of effort could make them lay smooth.

Additionally, the color fell short of expectations, lacking the vibrant teal hue we had hoped for! Luckily we’ve learned from this and will invest in slightly better quality table cloths on all future events. (It’s always a learning process!)

Planning Your Food Fueling Station

The heart of any memorable baby shower is the snack table, and for a space themed bash, you’ll want to turn it into your very own Food Fueling Station.

This isn’t just about feeding guests; it’s about launching them into a playful, imaginative universe from the moment they walk in.

Assemble a Constellation of Sweet Treats

Convenience meets creativity when it comes to selecting snacks.

Luckily, the snack aisle is already packed with cosmic goodies (thanks to Little Debbie). Here are some easy crowd-pleasers:

  • Pop Rocks. Made the perfect moon rocks!
  • Milky Ways. Pretty obvious isn’t it?
  • Moon Pies. We loved these nostalgic sweet treats! We bought minis in multiple flavors like strawberry, caramel, blueberry, and of course chocolate. The boxes were too cute so we used them as added table decor too.
  • Star crunches and cosmic brownies. The perfect space themed snacks!
  • Rocket ship fruit skewers. With so many sweets we wanted to make sure there were some fresh fruit options. These were so easy to make the morning of, and the rocket flame tails were a hit!
  • Flying saucers. Fresh baked donuts were perfect for our “space tower.”
  • Saturn rings. Peach-rings made the addition for our space themed treats table.
  • Space veggies. Maybe not as original as the others, but again we wanted to make sure we had some healthier choices!

DIY Galaxy Themed Space Food Labels

This is where the “fun” factor launched into orbit. We created small galaxy themed food label cards for each treat.

I used to Canva to create a galaxy of colors behind every food label!

Not only does this help guests know what’s what, but it also brings every element of your theme together.

For the main course…

We simplified our lives and ended up catering some of the best Mexican food for the main course! We had pollo asada, carnitas, and carne asada tacos, rice, beans, and fresh made horchata. They set-up, cleaned up after, and even stayed and served guests! Our advice to any party planner, make at least one thing in your party easy on you, it’s hard to do it all.

Strike the perfect balance when planning baby shower games and activities!

Include a mix of solo tasks, group challenges, and fun activities everyone can enjoy together for a memorable celebration.

Baby “Space Book” Guest Sign-In

The Keepsake That’s Truly Universal

We wanted to create a cute way that guests could sign in to the baby shower.

This black and white space themed baby book was perfect!

Guests could write their sweet sentiments to the baby and it would be a forever keepsake.

Brighten Those Midnight Feeds with Late Night Advice Cards

Support and Encouragement When It’s Needed Most

Anyone who has had a newborn knows how long and lonely those nights can be.

We wanted to offer a way for guests to provide advice, wishes, and fun reminders to help out the new parents when times get tough!

The Classic Clothespins Game

Don’t Say Baby

We wanted to inject some playful competition in this baby shower!

We gave each guest a clothespin as they arrive and explain the rules for the “Don’t Say Baby” challenge.

If someone catches another guest saying the word “baby,” they can steal that person’s clothespin.

The guest with the most clothespins at the finale won a cosmic prize!

This game always delivers laughs and energizes the group, breaking the ice as guests listen and mingle.

Celebrate Every Gift with a Dedicated Table

Show Appreciation

We tried to make guests feel special as soon as they arrive by setting up a nicely decorated gifts and cards table.

We added a personalized sign with a sweet sentiment from the parents for everyone’s contributions.

Having a clear and inviting setup helps keep the event organized so nothing goes missing in orbit.

Wood Block Decorating Station for an Out-of-This-World Keepsake

Crafting Memories for our Future Astronaut

This was a very fun baby shower activity!

You decorate a wood block with a picture that matches the correlating letter.

Example: Stars for S and Moon for M.

Once people started drawing they couldn’t stop.

We kept the entertainment simple with two fun group activity games.

The Diaper Challenger

This baby shower game was straightforward yet so much fun!

Participants were blindfolded and challenged to change a diaper on a stuffed animal as quickly as possible.

We added a creative touch by building a rocket ship out of foam core and using it as a scoreboard, where we wrote everyone’s times for an exciting twist.

The Big Baby Food Challenge

This game had everyone cracking up!

We cut holes in a white sheet and attached baby sleeper onesies to them.

In teams of two, one person stuck their head through the hole to become the “big baby,” while their partner reached through the onesie armholes to feed them.

The catch?

The feeder couldn’t see what they were doing!

The messiness and hilarity of the race to finish had everyone laughing nonstop.

What’s the fun of baby shower games without prizes?

We created custom labels using Canva and put together homemade jam and candy boxes as thoughtful prizes for the winners!

The Centerpiece Cake You Have to See

No baby shower is complete without cake, and this one was no exception!

Our sister-in-law’s friend handled the cake, and it exceeded all expectations.

Adorned with an adorable space theme, complete with toy astronaut cake toppers that doubled as keepsakes, it was both a treat for the taste buds and a memorable centerpiece.

Houston we have a baby shower re-cap!

  • Digital invitations. Instead of traditional invites my sister-in-law sent out digital ones with their baby registry as well as the option to RSVP. (Easy and cost effective!)

  • The venue. Baby boy came earlier than expected so we had to delay the baby shower for a few weeks. It originally was supposed to be outside but the weather was now going to be too hot. So we opted for a venue at my parents beautiful community clubhouse!

  • How we found our theme & colors. My brother and sister-in-law wanted space theme so that was simple enough! We needed an inspiration photo and this space themed balloon garland was it. The colors where soft blues, teals, and silvers. It set the tone for every decor item that we chose after.

  • The decor. After searching Pinterest and Amazon we found some great inspiration pics for the look and decor items we wanted.

  • Where we splurged. The catered food (made it so easy!) Also the cardboard cut outs of the astronaut and rocket ship. Although pricier, they made the baby shower fun, whimsical, and created the perfect photo op!

  • Where we saved. Dollar store for all food platters and trays! DIY options like making and printing our own table top signs, food labels, and the baby bottle rocket centerpieces.

  • How we saved time. We opened up every single package and placed everything in canvas tote bags organized by table. Once we had access to the venue we only had 1.5 hours to set up. We had to be organized and that’s what saved us! Also the day before we blew up the balloon garland and kept it in two pieces, we were able to fit them into my smaller SUV no problem and they looked just as good the 2nd day.

  • Special touches. My husband is AMAZING at creating immersive playlists. He created a special one on Spotify called “Declan’s Space Odyssey: Meteor Shower.” It has rocket ship launch countdowns, Star Wars, and every space themed related song you can think of! What’s so special is he shared the playlist with the new mom and dad to have forever.

  • What we would have done differently. Those table cloths were a nightmare! (The glitter ones from the dollar store and the teal ones on the tables) We went cheap with a plastic cloths from amazon, not only where they wrinkled, the color was not as vibrant as the picture showed. We also bought way too many sweet treats, we ended up give away dozens most of them to guests as they left to take home! Less is more especially when there’s going to be excellent food catered 🙂

  • The biggest hits. The word scramble and baby trivia cards on the tables. I didn’t know people would love these so much! Also, the little astronaut napkins on the plates. Maybe a bit of a splurge, but completely worth it. Meri Meri products are truly amazing.

Being able to throw this baby shower was so much fun but we didn’t do it alone!

My mom and I planned it, shopped for everything, and made all the DIY’s.

My husband helped set up everything up, took all the photos, and create a custom playlist.

My Dad handled the venue, caterer, ran errands for us, and helped set-up.

My sister- in-law’s mom helped with half of the cost as well!

With the right blend of imagination and organization, your “Houston We Have a Boy” space themed baby shower is sure to be an interstellar hit, ours sure was!

Fill your space themed baby shower with bold decorations, creative activities, and plenty of heartfelt moments, and you’ll send everyone home over the moon with memories.

Happy Celebrating!
